'When I was Your Age' is not relevant anymore

Ever just felt like quitting? Feel like the weight of the world is heavy on your shoulders, and you pray, day and night, that just once, you are allowed to set it down for a second to catch your breath? Ever felt like despite you being tired, the world keeps telling you to move it along. That there is no time to waste.  That this world does not sympathize with those who can’t handle ‘it’. And that there are a million people depending on you.  And maybe there are. But jeez!!!

When were we ever given the time to figure out what  ‘it’ is? When were we ever directed to follow a particular path and butt-kicked towards it. And the older generation, they think that we millennials are lazy, that all we do is sit on our hands with eyes
fixated on our phones. And they continually tell us, ‘You know Wandia, when I was your age, I had a thriving business in town’. Or ‘When I was your age, I had a husband already, ready to settle’. But that is the thing. We might be in the same referenced age, but this is a new generation, changing by the hour. These are not the times that trends took ages to catch on. There is a new phone out every day. And we were thrust into this world with the same ease as the older generation. We just have fast fingers and sharper minds. But without guidance, we are moles digging the same tunnel, bumping into each other and ending up right where we started. Without mentoring from this generation, we are the sitting ducks. Combine that confusion with the society’s expectations and critique, without anyone to lead you in a particular direction. Feel like the world is heavy on your shoulders?

The generation that has passed might have dropped the ball. Don’t get it twisted though, I do not blame all of them. There are real MVPs in this country giving their all. But we do need our generation, the millennials to mentor themselves. We need to rise up and show fellow comrades the way. And as much as this is a selfish generation, remember that nations cannot be built by a single person alone. That is you becoming a loner if you were to go down that road. You never do know who will save your generation (like David and Jonathan…people who read the Bible…..anyone??...okaaaay)
